"The connection to the server has failed."
Split from: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/thread/a424e146-1a2f-4133-80d5-db98f08f5421This sounds like my problem but I have msn (dial-up .. it sucks) as my provider and I'm using smtp.live.com as the server. It started out intermittent this weekend and now it never works. I have a second computer that doesn't send either. It sounds like msn changed something on me.

I understand MSN is your connectivity provider, but it isn??t clear from your problem statement which email program you are using. Sorry .. I thought I was in an outlook express forum. I'm using outlook express 6.0, xp sp2. The error window shows:The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Msn', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

This forum only supports the mail program that comes with Vista, Windows Mail. However, that error message is quite universal.Try this: change the outgoing port number from 25 to 587. If after making that change you get a different error message, go ahead and post it here. I tried port 587 and it's a different error:Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Msn', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0FI still think Msn changed something. I'll try getting through to them tonight.
